Jerry Cavallerano, OD, PhD, FAAO is staff optometrist and Assistant to the Director of the Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center. He is Associate Professor of Optometry, New England College of Optometry, and Adjunct Clinical Professor, Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Cavallerano received his O.D. from the New England College of Optometry and his Ph.D. from Fordham University.



Dr. Cavallerano was a member of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial research team that received the 1994 Charles H. Best Distinguished Service Award of American Diabetes Association. As editor of the New England Journal of Optometry he received awards for Most Improved Regional Journal in 1988 and Best Regional Journal in 1989.
Dr. Cavallerano has served as editor of the New England Journal of Optometry and on the editorial boards of Diabetes Spectrum and Clinical Diabetes. He is presently on the scientific editorial review board of Review of Optometry.



Dr. Cavallerano is a clinical co-investigator for the Eli Lilly sponsored Oral Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus. He is also presently engaged in research programs using the Joslin Vision Network, the telemedicine initiative of the Beetham Eye Institute and the Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. Cavallerano’s past clinical research activities include The Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study, Diabetic Macular Edema Study, Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, and the Sorbinil Retinopathy Trial.
