2009 Summer Research Student
Internship Program

The Joslin Diabetes Center Summer Research Student Internship Program provides 8-12 weeks of research experience for undergraduate
(current or completed) and current or upcoming medical students
under the supervision of Joslin research investigators.

The goal of this program is to provide practical exposure to biomedical research, ranging from clinically focused to basic science investigation.

In addition, students will participate in didactic sessions related to
diabetes pathophysiology and treatment. At the end of the program, participants will present results from their research efforts to their student colleagues and Joslin research staff.

The online application is now CLOSED.

Additional Information on the Program & Application:

1) Students are required to submit an on-line application by January 20, 2009. Applications will be reviewed by Joslin staff only after the application process has closed, i.e. AFTER January 20. Notification of acceptance into the program will be completed by April 1, 2009.
2) We strongly encourage students who are interested in this program to review website descriptions of Joslin investigator research programs, following the investigator link below. Applicants may identify up to 3 research investigators of particular interest.

Research investigators will review applications and contact selected students to discuss research opportunities. If there are no openings in the laboratories initially identified, the application will be circulated to additional investigators for their consideration, if the student so chooses.

Dates for internships are somewhat flexible but generally are 10 to 12 weeks in length.
3) There are 6 paid internships, with a stipend of $3,000 each, available for current medical students, dental students, students in other health-professional programs, and graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences. **All other positions are volunteer positions this year.** To be eligible for the stipend, students must be:
  • Citizens or permanent residents of the US
  • Enrolled and in good standing and must have completed at least one quarter in a program leading to a clinical doctorate or a masters or clinical doctorate degree in a quantitative science, such as physics, mathematics, or engineering, before participating in the program.
  • Enrolled and in good standing in medical, dental, PharmD, or other health professional program
  • Individuals already holding a research doctorate or master’s degree, or a combined professional and research doctorate normally are not eligible for short-term training positions.
To be considered for the funded positions, students need to apply both to Joslin program (via this website) and to the NIDDK program (application website http://medicalstudentdiabetesreseach.org/, where they should indicate Joslin as their internship site. Students not accepted for a funded position will be automatically considered for a volunteer position.
4) Please note that the program is unable to assist with travel or housing arrangements for students.
5) If you have any questions, please email us at SummerStudent@Joslin.Harvard.edu

Joslin Investigators Available for the Summer Research Program*
*Please note that a major objective of the Summer Student Program is for students to learn about the importance of diabetes research and how it is conducted. You should select investigators who are actively involved in a research program that interests you.

A search of recent publications may also help you select investigators. A link to PubMed is available on each investigator's page.
