Technical Director of DERC Genomics Core Facility 

Duties And Responsibilities: The primary responsibility will be to process samples provided by Joslin investigators in order to analyze gene expression using Affymetrix GeneChip technology, newly established at Joslin.  This will include cRNA sample preparation from RNA, standard reagent preparation, and hybridization of samples to oligonucleotide arrays, washing of chips, scanning of chip arrays, and maintenance of equipment and databases. In addition, the director interacts with investigators and fellows, advising them on sample preparation and data analysis. The director also supervises other core technical personnel and is responsible for oversight and maintenance of quantitative RT-PCR equipment.


Required Education, Experience and Skills: B. S. or B. A. in molecular biology or biochemistry, with specific practical molecular biology experience, including RNA processing.  Computer skills, including familiarity with Windows NT systems and data base management required. MS preferred. 2+ years of molecular biology experience. Working with RNA and DNA samples from wide variety of tissues and cells, including human samples. Prolonged sitting at computer terminal for data analysis. Interaction with multiple investigators and fellows on daily basis. Ability to pipet small volume samples, load samples on to gene chips and PCR plates for hybridization use computer keyboard for data analysis.

  • Maintain equipment in Genomics Core Facility
  • Process Investigator-provided samples, including hybridization, washing, and sample analysis (Affymetrix system) and experimental design and analysis (quantitative RT-PCR).
  • Provide assistance and feedback to investigators with data analysis
  • Provide ongoing education for new fellows, both one-on-one and to group audiences, regarding use of core methodologies.
  • Maintain core database and analysis software using NT system.
  • Attend internal research seminars to keep abreast of current research at Joslin.
  • Maintain charge back account records.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Provide oversight of RT-PCR equipment, budget, and sign-up procedures.
  • Prepare monthly reports of core usage.
