Richard M. Calderon, OD, FAAO is Associate Chief, Clinical Practice and Chief, Optometry at the Beetham Eye Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center. He is also Associate Professor, New England College of Optometry and Adjunct Clinical Professor, Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Calderon is Director of Ophthalmic Ultrasound at the Beetham Eye Institute, Executive Board Member of the International Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Ophthalmology (SIDUO) and has been practicing Ophthalmic Ultrasound since 1976. Ultrasound training includes studies under Jackson Coleman, MD - Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York and Karl Ossoinig, MD - University of Iowa. He received his Doctor of Optometry Degree from the New England College of Optometry and began working at the Beetham Eye Institute in 1975 with William P. Beetham, MD and Lloyd M. Aiello, MD.


Dr. Calderon has participated in many clinical research trials. Clinical co-investigator of the Pharmacia Pharmaceutical sponsored Heparin Surface Modified Intraocular Lens Implant Study, clinical co-investigator for the Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Oral Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study, Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS), Diabetic Retinopathy Study (DRS), National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Epidemiology of Diabetic Intervention and Complication (EDIC), Diabetic Macular Edema Study (DMES) and Sorbinil Study. He also served as ultrasound consultant - National Eye Institute Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial (COMET). Dr. Calderon is an Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) Certified Ophthalmic Photographer and applies his skills of ultrasound, ophthalmic photography and optometry to many of Joslin's research studies.



Administrative roles include work as Associate Chief of Clinical Practice, Director of Ophthalmic Ultrasound, Chief of Optometry and recently included work in the Institute for Health Care Improvement Study for Idealized Design of Clinical Office Practice that is an international collaborative to improve the design of health care delivery.
