The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is located on the 3rd floor of the Joslin Diabetes Center. The Clinical Trials Unit performs quality testing on new industry-sponsored treatments for diabetes and its complications. Clinical trials in the past have tested the effects of various compounds in lowering blood sugar, including troglitazone, pioglitazone, metformin, and acarbose, as well as new rapid-acting insulin analogs such as Lispro. All have since received the approval of the Food and Drug Administration.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all new investigational medications be thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness before they can be prescribed to patients. As a site that participates in clinical research, the Joslin Diabetes Center helps to gather data on new therapies and products for diabetes mellitus by running clinical trials using research volunteers. The CTU at the Joslin Diabetes Center provides investigators with:
Three outpatient exam/procedure rooms for patient visits Laboratory for specimen processing Highly skilled nursing services Study coordination Nutrition services
Studies are currently underway to test the effectiveness of other drugs to lower blood sugar and/or blood lipid levels. Studies are also being done to validate new blood glucose monitoring systems. For more information about the Joslin Clinical Trials Unit or for information about studies that are available for research volunteers please contact the Clinical Research Administrative Manager.
Cardiovascular Research Laboratory: The Joslin Clinical Research Center has available a Toshiba model Powervision 8000 high resolution ultrasound system, providing the capability for studies of vascular reactivity and endothelial function as well as measurements of carotid intimal media thickness. This core facility is provided for research purposes only. CHS approval of the protocol is required prior to using the facility. This facility may be utilized for either investigator-initiated projects or industry-initiated projects. This core is a service facility supported by chargebacks with Investigators being responsible for payment on a per scan basis. Current rates can be obtained from the Clinical Research Administrator.
Body Composition and Bone Mineral Density Core Laboratory: The Joslin Clinical Research Center has available a Hologic Delphi DEXA Scanner (Hologic QDR Elite Fan Beam X-Ray Densitometer; model number 4500A with a Delphi Upgrade, providing the capacity for measuring body composition and bone mineral density.
